VE Day Project

VE Day History Project 2020

In May this year, we will be celebrating VE Day (Victory in Europe Day.)

We would love for you to find out all about what this was, when it was, why it happened, who it involved, what it meant to people in Europe and the UK, what it meant to people around the world?

We are sure you will learn lots of things about VE Day. These are just some ideas to get you started.

Activities:

Here are a few ideas to get you started...

What did people do to celebrate this victory?

Year 5 and 6 - Listen to chapters of Goodnight Mr Tom, just go to the Year 5 star.

Have a look at VE day street parties. Can you create a menu for the party, write a diary about the day, design an outfit to wear, make a decoration?

Can you crack the code?

War Songs Medley

You will hopefully remember this medley from our WW1 singing. In WW2 they were still singing these same songs. See what you can remember and have a go at singing along with the backing track. Maybe you could record yourselves and send to us?
See words below.

War Songs Medley

INTRO

Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag
And smile, smile, smile,
While you've a lucifer to light your fag,
Smile, boys, that's the style.
What's the use of worrying?
It never was worthwhile, so
Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag
And smile, smile, smile. (repeat)

INTRO (count 16 beats)

Keep the Home Fires Burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home.
There's a silver lining
Through the dark clouds shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out
'Til the boys come home. (STRAIGHT ON – NO INTRO)

It's a long way to Tipperary
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly
Farewell Leicester Square!
It's a long long way to Tipperary
But my heart's right there. (repeat)

INTRO (count 15 beats)

Goodbye-ee, goodbye-ee,
Wipe the tear, baby dear, from your eye-ee,
Tho' it's hard to part I know,
I'll be tickled to death to go.
Don't cry-ee, don’t sigh-ee,
There's a silver lining in the sky-ee,
Bonsoir, old thing, cheer-i-o, chin, chin,
Nah-poo, toodle-oo, Goodbye-ee.

Bonsoir, old thing, cheer-i-o, chin, chin,
Nah-poo, toodle-oo, Goodbye-ee.
